Dusk to Dawn tinted eye cream with Bakuchiol, Alpha Arbutin and Peptides for brighter, healthier-looking under eyes

Is Retinol the Best Ingredient for Eye Creams?

Retinol has earned its reputation as one of skincare's gold-standard ingredients. If you've ever looked for an eye cream to target fine lines or dark circles, you've probably noticed that many of them proudly list retinol as their hero ingredient. And honestly, there's a good reason for that. It's one of the most researched ingredients in skincare and has been trusted for decades.

But here's something people don't talk about enough. Just because an ingredient is popular doesn't automatically make it the right choice for every product.

When we started formulating Dusk to Dawn, we had a different question in mind. Instead of asking, "How do we make another retinol eye cream?" we asked, "How do we make an eye cream people will actually enjoy using every single day?"

Why is everyone obsessed with retinol?

Retinol is a form of Vitamin A that encourages your skin to renew itself faster.

That means it can help improve:

  • Fine lines

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Acne

  • Post-acne marks

  • Skin texture

It's one of the most researched ingredients in skincare, which is why you'll find it in so many serums, moisturizers and especially eye creams.

If you've ever shopped for an eye cream, you've probably noticed that retinol is one of the most commonly used hero ingredients.

But retinol comes with a few conditions

While retinol is incredibly effective, it also comes with a few conditions. Because it speeds up skin renewal, it's normal for your skin to go through an adjustment period when you first start using it. During this time, some people experience dryness, flaking or irritation, especially around the delicate eye area.

Retinol also asks for a little more commitment. It's usually introduced gradually, works best as part of your nighttime routine and should always be paired with sunscreen the following morning. This adjustment period is so common that skincare enthusiasts even have a name for it, the "Retinol Tax." For many people, it's completely worth it. For others, it can make skincare feel more complicated than it needs to be.

Why is retinol usually only recommended at night?

One of the biggest reasons retinol is recommended at night is because it can make your skin more sensitive to UV exposure, particularly while your skin is still adjusting to the ingredient. That's why dermatologists consistently recommend wearing sunscreen every morning if you're using retinol.

This doesn't mean retinol suddenly stops working during the day. However, because sun exposure can increase the risk of irritation—and because most of us aren't perfect about reapplying sunscreen, nighttime is generally considered the safest and simplest way to use it. If you prefer products that fit seamlessly into both your morning and nighttime routine, this can feel a little restrictive.

Is there an alternative to retinol?

Not every eye cream needs to rely on a single hero ingredient. Instead of trying to recreate a traditional retinol eye cream, we chose to build a formula where each ingredient has a specific purpose.

Bakuchiol helps support smoother, firmer-looking skin and is often chosen as a gentler alternative for those who don't want to use retinol. Alpha Arbutin helps reduce the appearance of dark circles and uneven pigmentation by targeting excess melanin production. Niacinamide helps brighten while strengthening the skin barrier, Peptides support firmer-looking skin over time, and Ceramides help reinforce the delicate skin barrier around the eyes, keeping the area hydrated and comfortable.

Rather than asking one ingredient to do everything, we let each ingredient do what it does best.

Why we chose this formula for Dusk to Dawn

From the very beginning, we knew Dusk to Dawn wasn't going to be an eye cream you only reached for before bed. The subtle tint is designed to instantly brighten tired-looking under-eyes, making it just as useful while getting ready in the morning as it is before winding down at night.

That meant we needed a formula that could visibly brighten, hydrate and support the delicate under-eye area without limiting when you could use it. Instead of relying solely on retinol, we combined ingredients that work together to target multiple concerns while making the eye cream suitable for both your morning and nighttime routine.

Does that mean retinol isn't good?

Not at all.

Retinol remains one of the most effective skincare ingredients available, and if your skin responds well to it, there's every reason to keep using it. But effective skincare isn't always about choosing the strongest ingredient, it's about choosing the formula that works best for your skin, your lifestyle and the way you actually use your products.

For Dusk to Dawn, our goal was never to replace retinol. Our goal was to create an eye cream that could brighten, hydrate and support the under-eye area while fitting effortlessly into your everyday routine, whether that's the first step in your morning or the last step before bed.

It's not about choosing retinol or Bakuchiol

There's no such thing as one perfect skincare ingredient. The best formulas aren't built around what's trending, they're built around what makes sense for the product and the people using it.

Retinol has earned its place in skincare, but it isn't the only path to healthier-looking skin. Sometimes, the best routine isn't the one with the longest list of rules. It's the one you'll actually enjoy following every single day.
